Practical-applications-of-uv-visible-and-ftir-spectroscopy-2022
Location: Online
Course dates: 4-15 September 2022
Registration deadline: July 31, 2022
Workshop Instructors: Prof. Giora Rytwo
Prof. Giora Rytwo teaches several Thermodynamics, Physical Chemistry, Water Treatment, Spectroscopy and Environmental Sciences courses, and is Head of the Environmental Physical Chemistry Laboratory at MIGAL- Galilee Research Institute. He has been granted 10 patents in water treatment, with additional patents pending. Since 1990 he has published more than 90 peer-reviewed scientific papers, book chapters and peer-reviewed compilations, most of them as first or corresponding author, and his scientific work is widely quoted. Most of his scientific research is based on a wide range of spectroscopic methods (UV-Visible, FTIR, relaxation NMR, light dispersion, XRF, etc.), and in some of those fields he has developed specific approaches and methods that are highly quoted and widely used.
Workshop Overview
Tel-Hai College and MIGAL-Galilee Research Institute are offering a unique workshop in UV-Visible and FTIR spectrophotometers.
UV-Visible and FTIR spectrophotometers are relatively low-cost and simple-maintenance instruments available in most institutes and laboratories. These methods are not always fully exploited, and several applications that can elucidate very interesting information are not used.
In our workshop we will focus on:
Deepening our understanding on the methods
Avoiding mistakes and misinterpretations
Overcoming interferences
Introducing advanced uses such as: In situ catalysis measurements
Kinetic analysis
In situ changes in organic molecules (e.g. interactions between functional groups or protein secondary structure determination)
Relative quantification in mixtures and other possible applications
The workshop materials will be available online from September 4th, 2022. The live sessions will begin on August 21st.
Live sessions schedule (Israel timezone GMT+2):
September 4th, Sunday:
Introduction to spectroscopy: Electromagnetic spectrum, dual properties of light, radiation laws (Kirchoff, Planck, Stefan-Boltzmann and Wien), description of different spectroscopy methods according to wavelength.
September 5th, Monday:
UV-Visible spectroscopy I: The UV-Vis spectrum, colors and chromophores, absorption coefficient, Beer-Lambert's Law, influencing parameters (interferences, changes in the chromophore, bato- or hypsochromic shifts, solvent influences)
September 6th, Tuesday:
UV-Visible spectroscopy II: mixtures, types of instruments (diode array, single wavelength, screening), UV-Visible spectroscopy in quantification, limitations, types of cuvettes and uses, specific application (on line monitoring, kinetics analysis)
September 7th, Wednesday:
UV- Visible spectroscopy III: "Demonstration lab session". Different instruments and test cases (open to possible students' requests). Measuring data and elaborating it (e.g. preparing calibrations, measuring OD and evaluating concentration in simple cases and in mixtures).
September 8th, Thursday:
UV-Visible spectroscopy IV: elaborating experimental data. Interactive on-line lesson on measured results, discussion, and summary.
September 11th, Sunday:
IR spectroscopy I: General introduction, vibrations and rotations, IR selection rules, Hook's law, functional groups, types of vibrations, fingerprint region, FTIR and its advantages, general uses, FTIR for identification of chemicals, measurements methods principles (absorbance, ATR, DRIFT, linear dichroism).
September 12th, Monday:
IR spectroscopy II: preparation of samples for the different methods, specific accessories and additional options (thin films, cards, IR-tran slides), measuring gases, quantification approaches: "IR cuvettes", relative quantification based on peaks ration, peaks deconvolutions (proteins analysis as an example).
September 13th, Tuesday:
IR- spectroscopy III: "Demonstration lab session". Different instruments and test cases (open to students' requests). Measuring data and elaborating on it (e.g. different measurements modes, identification procedure, advantages and limitation of use of "libraries", observing changes and interactions, peaks deconvolution, relative quantification.
September 14th, Wednesday:
IR spectroscopy IV: elaborating on experimental data. Interactive on-line lesson on measured results, discussion, and summary.
September 15th, Thursday:
A brief overview on additional spectroscopy and "light-molecules interactions" based on techniques (specific topics subject to changes according to participants requests and questions) such as: turbidity, atomic spectroscopy, NMR and fluorescence methods: principles, similarity and differences from UV-Visible methods. X-Ray based techniques (XPS, XRF). Summary of the workshop.
Eligibility
The workshop will be taught in English and is intended for graduate students, postdocs, research scientists and industry representatives.
Students can obtain two credit points subject to the approval of their home institution.
Prerequisite requirement: Participants should have a basic knowledge and understanding of general chemistry/organic chemistry. They should be fluent in basic concepts such as chemical bonds, atoms and molecules, as well as terminology, such as "functional groups, carbonyl bond, aromatic rings". If in doubt, please consult with the workshop facilitator before registering for the workshop.
