About the Instructor:
Izhay Oplatka is a professor of Educational Administration and Leadership. Prof. Oplatka. is the head of the Department of Educational policy and Administration, Tel-Aviv University. His main areas of interest are the foundations of educational leadership as a field of study, emotion in organizations, gender and leadership, and leadership for social justice. Prof. Oplatka has written extensively about these topics in major academic outlets and publishers.
Professor Oplatka’s research focuses on the lives and careers of school teachers and principals, educational marketing, emotions and educational administration, and the foundations of educational administration as a field of study. His most recent books include Reforming Education in Developing Countries: From Neoliberalism to Communitarianism (2019, Routledge), Project Management in Schools (with M. Yemini and N. Sagi, 2018, Palgrave-Macmillan), Higher Education Consumer Choice (2015, with Jane Hemsley-Brown, Palgrave), The Legacy of Educational Administration: A Historical Analysis of an Academic Field (2010, Peter Lang Publishing); The Essentials of Educational Administration (2015, Pardes Publisher, in Hebrew); Organizational Citizenship Behavior in Schools (2015, Routledge, with Anit Somech). Professor Oplatka’s publications have appeared in a variety of international journals including Educational Administration Quarterly, Journal of Educational Administration, Educational Management Administration & Leadership, Comparative Education Review, Teacher College Record, Canadian Journal of Education Administration and Policy, International Journal of Leadership in Education, Journal of Education Policy, School Leadership & Management, Urban Education, International Journal of Educational Management, and so forth.
Course Overview:
This course will familiarize students with both basic and advanced theories of general leadership, with a particular emphasis on educational leadership from historical and sociological points of view.
Special attention will be given to the distinctive features of educational leadership due to the particular characteristics of schools as an organization and the complex aspects of teaching as a semi-profession.
At the end of the course the students will realize how contexts both shape and are reshaped by educational leaders and will gain a deeper understanding of leadership as a craft of multiple styles depending on a host of factors. To enrich the learning experiences, different case studies from Asia and Europe will illustrate how leaders face dilemmas and difficulties throughout their career.

From Management to Leadership: The beginning of leadership thought.
Basic Theories of Leadership.
Power, Authority and Politics in schools.
Models of Educational Leadership – instructional and moral.
Models of Shared and Responsible Leadership.
Female Leadership – a feminist point of view.
Educational Leadership in Traditional and Developing Societies.
Exceptional Educational Leaders + Conclusions to the course

Eligibility:
The course will be taught in English and is intended for graduate students in the Educational Management field.
Students can obtain two credit points subject to the approval of their home institution.
